Medicare Eligibility
 

 

There are four ways a person can become eligible for Medicare:

  • On the first day of the month the person attains age 65.
  • On the first day of the 29th month following the day the person is found to be totally and permanently disabled under either the Railroad Retirement Act of the Social Security Act.
  • For persons with end stage renal disease, on the earliest date of:
    • the first day of the third month after the month the person begins a course of maintenance dialysis treatments, or
    • the first day of the month the person is admitted to an approved hospital for a kidney transplant or procedures preliminary to a transplant, or
    • the first day of the month the person participates in a self-dialysis training program in a Medicare-approved training facility.
  • When the person meets the eligibility requirements of a disabled child.

Supplement to Medicare
 

 

For a monthly premium, railroad employees who are eligible under Medicare have available a health insurance plan that will supplement Medicare benefits. These benefits are outlined in Plan F of a booklet entitled Group Health Insurance Plans for Former Railroad Employees and their Dependents, Group Policy Number GA-23111. If you do not have this booklet, it may be obtained from your employer, your labor organization or from United Healthcare.
