Other Benefits

In addition to health insurance benefits, railroad employees have the following benefits available to them:

Dental Plan

The Railroad Employees' National Dental Plan provides benefits to cover a portion of the expenses incurred by a covered employee and his or her eligible dependents for dental treatments necessary to remedy defects caused by injury or disease. It does not provide benefits to cover unreasonably high dental charges or unnecessary dental work, such as treatments for cosmetic purposes.

The eligibility requirements and benefits available are detailed in a booklet entitled Railroad Employees' National Dental Plan booklet. If you do not have one of these booklets, you may obtain one through your employer, your local union organization or Aetna.

Coverage under the Plan terminates upon the earliest of the following dates:

  • When the employment relationship terminates, other than for retirement.
  • At the end of the calendar month next following the month in which the employee last rendered compensated service or received vacation pay as an employee.
  • When the employee is no longer in an eligible class.
  • When the group contract discontinues.

There are certain circumstances that may extend the length of coverage available. For example, if an employee ceases to render compensated service solely as the result of disability, both the employee and his or her dependents will continue to be covered for dental benefits until the end of the first calendar year next following the year in which compensated service was rendered. Please consult the Railroad Employees' National Dental Plan booklet, or .

Life Insurance

The Railroad Employees National Health and Welfare Plan (the Plan) provides--in addition to health insurance--a life insurance policy for active and retired railroad employees. These life insurance benefits are administered by Metlife. If an employee's or retired employee's life insurance under the Plan ends, he or she may purchase a personal policy of life insurance. Application must be made during the "conversion period," which is the 31-day period after the life insurance ends. If the employee dies during the conversion period, Metlife will pay a death benefit to the beneficiary.

There are certain conditions that could affect the ability to purchase such a personal policy of life insurance, as well as the amount the employee is eligible to purchase. Please consult The Railroad Employees National Health and Welfare Plan, which is described in a separate booklet entitled "The HEALTH AND WELFARE PLAN of the NATION'S RAILROADS and the RAILWAY LABOR ORGAINZIATIONS." This booklet also provides eligibility information and coverage amounts. If you do not have one of these booklets, you may obtain one from your employer, your local union organization or from Metlife. If you have further questions, just .

Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance

The Railroad Employees National Health and Welfare Plan (the Plan) also provides accidental death and dismemberment benefits to active employees. As with the life insurance benefits, these benefits are administered by Metlife. AD&D coverage ends the earliest of the following:

  • The last day of the calendar month following the calendar month in which a) the employee last rendered compensated service for a participating employer; or b) subject to any applicable conditions set forth in the Plan booklet, the employee last received vacation pay.
  • The date employment ends for reasons other than retirement, such as resignation.
  • The date the participating employer or participating railway labor organization ceases to participate in the Plan.
  • The date the class of employees is no longer included under the Plan.

In certain circumstances, the AD&D benefits under the Plan may continue past the dates set forth above.

Off-Track Vehicle Accident Benefits

Railroad employees are entitled to receive benefits under an agreement known as the Off-Track Vehicle Agreement for injuries or death sustained while such employees are riding in, boarding or alighting from off-track vehicles authorized by the carrier and such employees are:

  • Deadheading under orders
  • Being transported at carrier expense

Any benefits paid under this agreement are reduced by the amounts payable under the group life insurance policy provided by the railroad. In addition, any benefits paid may be applied as an offset by the railroad against any recovery made. Also, the railway carrier has subrogation rights against any third-party judgment or settlement.

Payment of these benefits and amounts payable are subject to the provisions of the agreement. Payments may be made for the following losses:

  • Loss of life
  • Loss of one or both hands
  • Loss of one or both feet
  • Loss of sight of one or both eyes
  • Various combinations of the above losses
  • Medical and hospital care not covered by railroad provided health insurance
  • Time lost from work reduced by sickness benefits payable and subject to a maximum amount per week for a maximum time period

Some exclusions apply. Please consult your local union organization, or .

Railroad Employees National Vision Plan

Under The Railroad Employees National Health and Welfare Plan, railroad employees and their dependents are eligible for the Vision Service Plan. This plan covers eyeglasses, frames and contact lenses. Other benefits may be available.

Please consult your local union organization, or .

Hearing Benefit

Railroad employees are entitled to an annual hearing examination to establish whether and to what extent there is a hearing loss. This benefit may, at the railway carriers' option, be administered through The Railroad Employees National Health and Welfare Plan or as a separate arrangement administered by the National Carriers' Conference Committee, and will include standard limitations, conditions and exclusions.
